Ambleside is one the most popular locations in the Lake District and boasts a great selection of independent shops, pubs, and restaurants. There is also a small independent cinema, or for the more active there is a superb indoor climbing wall.
Within easy walking distance from Knipe cottage, you can take steamers on Lake Windermere to Bowness, Lakeside, Wray castle and Brockhole visitors centre from Waterhead pier which dates back to 1845. Motor and rowing boats are available to hire if you want to take to the water in your own craft.
Many of the Wainwrights are accessible from the cottage, Loughrigg fell, Wansfell and the classic Fairfield Horseshoe. There are also gentler low-level walks through Wordsworth country following the historic trails around Rydal Hall taking in Rydal water, the caves and Grasmere water.
